Riding Through a Memphis Summer
Memphis summers are no joke. With average July highs near 92°F and humidity that makes it feel like you're cycling through warm soup, summer riding in the Bluff City requires some smart planning. But don't let the heat stop you — with the right approach, Memphis cycling is rewarding year-round.
Start Early, Finish Early
This is the golden rule. Getting on your bike before 8am means cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and significantly less traffic. Many Memphis cyclists are back home and showered before 10am, leaving the hottest part of the day for air conditioning.
Hydration is Non-Negotiable
Start hydrating the night before a hot-weather ride. During the ride, drink before you feel thirsty — a full 24oz bottle per hour of riding is a reasonable minimum. Electrolyte tablets or sports drinks help replace what you lose in sweat. Water stops along the Shelby Farms Greenway are strategically placed.
Dress Smart
Light-colored, moisture-wicking cycling jerseys and bibs reflect heat and move sweat away from your skin. A lightweight helmet with good ventilation is essential. Don't forget sunscreen on every exposed inch — the Memphis sun is relentless.
Route Selection Matters
Choose shaded routes on the hottest days. Lick Creek Trail System's forest canopy makes it significantly cooler than exposed paved trails. The Wolf River Greenway also offers good tree cover for stretches.
