The Most Unique Cycling Experience in Memphis
There are few cycling experiences quite like riding across the Mississippi River on the Big River Crossing. Spanning the historic Harahan Bridge, this remarkable pedestrian and bicycle bridge is the longest of its kind over the Mississippi River — and it's right here in Memphis. If you do one bike ride in the Bluff City, make it this one.
The Route
The crossing begins in Downtown Memphis near the South Main Arts District, a vibrant neighborhood of galleries, restaurants, and local shops worth exploring before or after your ride. From the bridge entrance, you'll pedal out over the river, climbing gently as the Memphis skyline unfolds behind you. At the midpoint, you're suspended directly above the mighty Mississippi — a view that never gets old.
Over the River to Arkansas
The bridge delivers you into West Memphis, Arkansas, where you can loop back or explore the Arkansas side of the river. The total out-and-back ride is about 2 miles, though most cyclists linger on the bridge soaking in the scenery.
Practical Tips
The bridge is free and open daily. It can get windy — hold onto your hat. Sunrise and sunset rides offer the most dramatic light. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends. Parking is available near the bridge entrance on the Tennessee side.
