Gearing Up for Every Memphis Season
Memphis cycling is a four-season activity if you gear up right. From the muggy heat of August to the crisp chill of January (and the occasional ice storm), having the right equipment for each season makes all the difference between a great ride and a miserable one.
Summer Essentials (May–September)
Memphis summers demand serious heat management. A well-ventilated helmet is non-negotiable. Lightweight, light-colored cycling jerseys and bibs wick sweat efficiently. Cycling-specific sunscreen (won't drip into your eyes) should be applied generously. Two large water bottles minimum — or a hydration pack for longer rides. A cooling neck wrap soaked in water provides surprising relief on the hottest days.
Spring and Fall Gear (March–April, October–November)
These are Memphis cycling's golden seasons. Temperatures are comfortable but variable — arm warmers and a packable wind jacket give you flexibility as mornings start cool and afternoons warm up. A pair of full-finger gloves handles those chilly early starts.
Winter Riding (December–February)
Memphis winters are mild by national standards, but cold fronts arrive suddenly. Thermal cycling tights, a mid-weight thermal jersey, and a wind-stopping outer layer cover most winter conditions. Insulated gloves and thermal ear covers complete the kit. The bonus: Memphis cycling paths are rarely icy, making year-round riding genuinely achievable.
Year-Round Essentials
Front and rear lights (always — Memphis has varying visibility conditions), a quality helmet, a mini pump and spare tube, and a phone mount for navigation round out the must-have list for any Memphis cyclist.
